The NNA is actively engaged with traditional land owners for the purposes of managing cultural heritage for the NPI - Stage 2. In doing so, we are:
- protecting Aboriginal areas and objects of cultural and heritage value
- engendering cultural awareness within the NNA and wider community
- complying with the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and develop positive working relationships with Aboriginal parties.
Some of the initiatives the NNA have taken to achieve this include:
- arranging a formal signing of the cultural heritage management plan on Friday, 9 October 2010 by Dr Eve Fesl, Elder of the Gubbi Gubbi people (the cultural heritage management plans detail how the project team and Indigenous groups will work together throughout construction to monitor and protect cultural heritage values and artifacts)
- engaging indigenous representatives to survey the land affected by the project and identify areas of potential cultural heritage significance
- establishing the Gubbi Gubbi people as the cultural monitors for the project
- working with Dr Eve Fesl, Elder of the Gubbi Gubbi people to train NNA staff in cultural heritage monitoring
- investigating the potential to develop Indigenous employment opportunities
- developing and delivering cultural heritage 'legacy outcomes' (e.g. presenting any found artifacts to Pomona Historical Museum and the Gubbi Gubbi Exhibit.)
Areas of European heritage significance will also be managed during the construction of the NPI - Stage 2. Due diligence will be taken during construction to ensure there is no impact on sites of cultural significance.
