Constructing a pipeline

Pipe deliveryBuilding a pipeline is a major construction project. Outlined below is an overview of what it takes to build a pipeline.

Mainline pipeline

There are a number of steps involved in building the pipeline safely and securely. Below are some of the steps involved in the construction process:

  • surveying
  • fencing
  • preparing the Right of Way
  • pipe stringing
  • backfill material stockpiling
  • pipelaying
  • backfilling
  • installing valves
  • pressure testing
  • rehabilitation.

The majority of the pipeline will be built using the open cut trenching method, but in some instances, a different technique (like tunnelling) will be used.

Essential facilities

Essential facilities must be built along the pipeline corridor to ensure the pipeline operates as it should. Facilities built along the pipeline include:

  • pigging facilities
  • section valves
  • air valves
  • drain down valves.
